DEAR PARENT OR GUARDIAN:
We know that one of the biggest threats facing our young people today is the technology to which they have such easy access. Our kids are being faced with incredible complexities as they navigate a culture that is largely a digital one.
If we are going to help protect them, we must normalize conversations around the digital dangers they face. These can be difficult realities, but as parents and caregivers, we have to press in with our young people on these topics. The ramifications for ignoring it are just too great.
This is why we are hosting a workshop for your teen in the upcoming weeks around digital dangers, safety, behavior, and values online. Our team from The Exodus Road, an anti- trafficking nonprofit, will be leading your teen in our program called Influenced: Ending Exploitation in Your Digital World. The interactive workshop will include discussions, statistics, examples, videos, and stories about the digital world today and how young people can protect themselves and their friends. It will also challenge your teens to consider the ramifications of their choices online and ask them to dignify the people in their online communities.
We’ll be covering important topics like:
- The dangers of spending too much time online
- The rise and ramifications of sexting and porn
- How predators may seek to groom or trick them or their friends and how to recognize it
- The rights young people have if they fall victim to online exploitation, like sextortion
- What to do if you or a friend is in a dangerous online situation
- The importance of open conversations with trusted adults around digital safety
The program is highly interactive and relevant; it focuses on soul health rather than rules and behavior. It does not utilize fear but rather leverages the power all young people have to make a better digital world for themselves and others. While the curriculum is designed for 6th – 12th graders, if your child is more sensitive to such topics or you feel like it may not be a good fit, please consider opting out. We are also happy to offer you an outline of the curriculum itself prior to the workshop if that would help for you to assess if it’s a good fit for your child.
Thank you so much for continuing to seek the best resources for our kids as they navigate an increasingly complex digital world.
Sincerely,
The Exodus Road Team
